Kiku-Ichimonji is a collective name given to all the swords forged by a group of 13 smiths who all served under the Emperor Go-Toba in feudal Japan. They each served the Emperor one month at a time, sharing with him the secrets of producing high-quality weaponry.
One interesting thing to note is that historically, the Kiku-Ichimonji are engraved with the Japanese characters "Ichi" (one), and the imperial chrysanthemum crest (which meant "kiku"), which is where they get their name. Neither the symbols, nor a picture of said plant appear on the Sword Quest version of the sword.
