Like all legendary swords, the Aegis has a page of manga that can be viewed after saving the blade to your collection.
In this scene, we see a large ball of fire careening towards something on a battlefield. It collides with its target, and the flames scatter all over the place, but when they clear, there stands a blonde knight clad in red armor, holding fast to the Aegis. It's assumed that the sword's power protected him from the blast, and potentially saved his life.
In ancient times, an Aegis was a large collar/neck shield worn by the Romans to signify protection (religious or otherwise). In fact, the old saying of doing something "under someone's aegis" meant performing said action under a strong, powerful, benevolent source. Aegis is also the name given to Zeus' magical shield, which he often lent to his daughter Athena for protection. In this context, it makes sense that the Sword Quest version would have shielding properties, and why it's created from fusing together three swords called "Defenders". Fans of the video game Persona 3 will also remember the name belonging to an android whose sole mission was to protect the main character.
